Ventura families, including Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura (HACSB) families, received valuable tax assistance at the Tacos and Taxes event, hosted by United Way and Golden State Opportunity in partnership with Senator Monique Limón and Assemblymember Steve Bennett. The event, held at Westview Village, provided community members with free tax preparation services and information on the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC)—a crucial benefit that puts money back into the pockets of working families.
The Tacos and Taxes initiative aimed to raise awareness about CalEITC and other tax credits available to low- and moderate-income households. By offering on-site assistance, families had the opportunity to maximize their refunds, helping them cover essential expenses such as rent, food, and childcare.
“It was great to be able to connect so many families to a critical resource like the free preparation service at our Tacos and Taxes event,” said Senator Monique Limón. “Thank you to our partners, including the Housing Authority of Ventura, for helping to put together such a successful event.”
Assemblymember Steve Bennett, who attended the event, praised the collaboration that made it possible, stating, “Thank you to our partners Golden State Opportunity, VC United Way, and HACSB for delivering tax prep services to those in need. I am especially grateful to the generous volunteers who provided assistance in English and Spanish. At these community events, we can ease the financial burden on families by securing all tax credits they are eligible for and connecting them with local resources.”
United Way and Golden State Opportunity played an instrumental role in organizing the event, offering expert guidance and connecting families with financial resources. Attendees not only received tax preparation support but also enjoyed a delicious taco plate as part of the welcoming.
The event highlighted the power of community partnerships and the ongoing commitment to outreach that directly benefits Ventura families. Jeffrey Lambert, Chief Executive Officer of the HACSB, emphasized the importance of collaboration, remarking, “We are truly honored that key nonprofits like United Way and Golden State Opportunity recognize the Housing Authority as a valued partner in their community efforts, especially a program as beneficial as free tax preparation services and education on CalEITC. We are proud to collaborate and ensure our families have access to these vital opportunities.”
